The Cuban Revolution was an armed revolt conducted by Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement and its allies against the right-wing authoritarian government of President Fulgencio Batista. After six years of armed struggle, Castro ousted Batista on 1 January 1959, putting in place a revolutionary socialist state. The Cuban Revolution had a profound cultural impact creating the new possibilities for anti-colonial struggles around the world. 
A major figure of the Cuban Revolution was Ernesto "Che" Guevara - an Argentine Marxist revolutionary, physician, author, guerrilla leader, diplomat, and military theorist.
